The types of projects that we’ve worked on include:
Network planning and system operations
Power system studies for distribution and transmission network planning and system operations.
- Modelled and tuned a Solar Turbines generator model in DIgSILENT PowerFactory, followed by validation against field testing measurements.
- Converted DIgSILENT PowerFactory models for a three types of gas-fired generators into PSCAD model format, including full validation and comprehensive documentation.
- Developed a 20-year power development plan for the four main electricity grids in Tonga (Tongatapu, Vava’u, Ha’apai and ‘Eua) using open-source software.
- Performed insulation coordination studies in DIgSILENT PowerFactory for the 132 kV Alkimos substation, including lightning impulse, switching and temporary over-voltage studies.
- Developed a CER hosting capacity simulation model in Python and supported the integration of the model into a DNSP’s existing analytics platform.
- Supported the development of a real-time frequency stability management tool for the NTESMO control room (GE EMS application), including development of the underlying calculations and a prototype application in Python and Excel.
Grid connections and developer support
Holistic techno-commercial support for developers, including grid connection studies, congestion analysis, energy and capacity market forecasts, and network assessments for site selection.
- Performed network screening analyses for 10+ prospective solar, wind and BESS facilities , including indicative congestion analysis.
- Performed congestion and thermal grid curtailment analyses for wind, solar and BESS facilities.
- Performed Network Access Quantity (NAQ) assessments for prospective wind, solar and BESS facilities looking to apply for Reserve Capacity Credits in the WEM.
- Performed a screening assessment to identify feasible locations and capacity sizes for a gas-fired peaking generator, including both power system and energy market assessments.
Techno-economic and energy market analyses
Techno-economic modelling, optimisation and analyses for all types of systems from microgrids to wholesale energy markets, including generation dispatch modelling, least-cost system planning and the investigation of energy market outcomes
- Developed a security-constrained unit commitment (SCUC) model to assess the value of optimised dispatch over current processes with battery energy storage system (BESS) integration for the Darwin-Katherine integrated system.
- Developed a techno-economic modelling roadmap for the WEM, including joint market and power system simulations, and data transformation pipelines. Part of this work included a five part techno-economic modelling training workshop. This roadmap has since led to the development of an internal AEMO PLEXOS model and data pipeline.
- Developed a framework for how BESS can be integrated into the NT interim energy market to best leverage the inter-temporal optimisation benefits that BESS can deliver.
Regulatory advice and policy development
Power system studies for distribution and transmission network planning and system operations.
- Supported the development of a framework for managing system strength in the SWIS, drawing lessons from the NEM and other jurisdictions. Project was performed in conjunction with AEMO, EPWA and Western Power.
- Conducted an independent technical review of a 275 kV transmission corridor project in South Sulawesi, Indonesia, including a review of the power system studies and techno-economic modelling performed to justify the project.
- Prepared survey reports on i) distribution network technical limitations and mitigation measures, and ii) distribution network planning frameworks in Australia, both with consideration for accelerated CER, EVs and electrification growth.
